Faux Marble on a Ceiling

Painted Ceiling Murals using trompe l'oeil and faux finishes
to create illusions on ceilings...domes, vaulted, coffers or flat have become a specialty of Art Effects.

 

Faux Finishing techniques, lead in making a Trompe L'Oeil Art Effect on this ceiling. We used airbrush, pre-primed canvas. It worked great for the marble, it is smooth, light weight and very easy to handle.
Working on sheets 4 feet by 8 feet at a time, (the size of a sheet of plywood for a work table), we applied a faux marble finish, using acrylic paints.
Using a clay base wall paper adhesive, we installed the tiles individually, just like you would install a canvas mural.


The design, cutting and layout took longer then actually installing the tiles.

Planning the tile design was the next step...precise measuring and then making a grid pattern on the ceiling made installation much easier.

Tim then cut each tile individually.

 

After the tiles were installed we applied real grout (mainly for a consistent color), and then of course marble has to be shiney, so two coats of a clear high gloss polyurethane were applied.
